I have a problem

I have a problem when it comes to games: Live service games absolutely eats my attention in a way that doesn’t feel fulfilling to me. Now, I don’t necessarily want to fall into the trap of everything I do must be for a bigger purpose and fulfill me– things can just be fun, and done for fun. But after spending many, many years (over many more years, coming back to it multiple times) on World of Warcraft, I wanted to find a way to help me:

  1. Play games that make me happy,
  2. Fulfill my desire for a sense of achievement within games, and
  3. Actually end.

The Solution

I have given myself a “gaming project” that I’m completing over, I’m sure, a number of years. I have avoided writing about it until I’ve gotten some way through it since… well, you know how projects go.

I want to get 100% achievement trophies on every game in the Final Fantasy series released on Steam.

The list, as of March 2024, is:

  • FF
  • FF2
  • FF3
  • FF4
  • FF5
  • FF6
  • FF7
  • FF7 Remake Intergrade
  • FF7 Crisis Core Remake
  • FF8 Remastered
  • FF9
  • FF10
  • FF10-2
  • FF12 TZA
  • FF13
  • FF13-2
  • Lightning Returns: FF13
  • FF15

I have italicized the games that I had played at least once in my life before starting this project. However, some games– like FF10– I remember extremely little of, and it will likely be closer to a blind playthrough. Others, like FF7, I have played through multiple times in my life and there will be very few if any surprises, even by the way of the 100% achievements.

Progress So Far

I started this project in early January 2024. I will write more thoughts on the games I’ve finished in later blog posts, but I currently have 100% achievements on FF7 Crisis Core, FF6, FF12 - TZA. I am close to getting 100% on FF7 Remake. The next game I have chosen to play is FF8 remastered.

FF8 100% requirements

Before starting, I want to make a list of the things I need to do to get 100% and not have to play through the game twice (or more. FF7: CC was the first game I did this with and did not look ahead of time, requiring me to play through the game almost three full times on different save slots to get everything).

Besides just “following the story”, these are the things I need to do in the playthrough, and when I have to complete them by:

  • Omega Weapon

    • Final dungeon

  • Odel Lake Secret

    • Post Ragnarok, Pre-Lunatic Pandora

  • All Timber Maniacs magazines

    • This seems really finicky according to online posts. Here’s my plan:
      • Balamb Town TRAIN STATION (not the hotel)
      • Timber Maniacs Office
      • Timber hotel guest room
      • Fisherman’s Horizon Grease Monkey Home
      • Fisherman’s Horizon Hotel
      • Trabia Garden Graveyard
      • Dollet bar
      • Dollet hotel
      • Shumi Village, Artisan’s House
      • White SeeD Ship, Bridge
      • Edea’s House
      • Deling City, hotel room

  • Pupu side quest

    • Post Lunar Base, Pre-Lunatic Pandora

  • All CC group members

    • Win 15 TT games NOT in Cafeteria, Library, 2F classroom.
      • Pre-Lunatic Pandora

  • Gotta make sure to get a few GFs Most are gettable at the end of the game, but must:

    • Diabolos
      • Talk to Cid before leaving for Timber
    • Alexander
      • Edea at Galbadia Garden
